Flourishing Product Design Method

This month our speaker is Dr. Jan Detand Professor in Industrial Design Engineering Technology at Ghent University. Jan will be presenting his colleague Dr. Francesca Ostuzzi, PhD in Industrial design Engineering Technology and Assistant at Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Product Design, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Ghent University, and his work in Flourishing Product Design Method.

The full catalogue of Francesca's work can be accessed here and Jan's work can be accessed here

For Jan's talk this month on Flourishing in Product Design, particular reference can be made to Francesca's presentation at Relating Systems Thinking and Design 6 (RSD6):

Ostuzzi, F., Detand, J., & Dejonghe, W. (2017). Open-ended Design as Second-order Design. A case study of teaching Cybernetics and System Thinking to Industrial Design students. In B. Sevaldson (Ed.), Systemic Design Pedagogy and Education. Aho School of Architecture and Design, Oslo, Norway: Systemic Design Network. Retrieved from ; ;

In addition her paper

Lastly, this talk is part of our members efforts to explore starting a new project around methods for flourishing product / service design ("what innovation"), and how this can be done simultaneously with flourishing business model design ("how innovation").   The business model design could be within a startup contexts or established enterprises (see our Project: Flourishing Enterprise Method and the strategy design method of our Project: Flourishing Enterprise Innovation Toolkit.  Many members of the group have expressed an interest in this topic, and a meeting to explore possibilities was held earlier this year. The minutes of this meeting were posted to our LinkedIn Group by Prof. Maya Hoveskog here, along with a GoogleDoc here

In Jan's talk this month he will be sharing and discussing his and Francesca's research on a Flourishing Product Design Method, critical to enable strongly sustainable outcomes of our enterprises - the combination of the product design and the business model design. At the end of this month's meeting we'll return to the topic of which members might be interested in collaborating on a project in this area, and what useful next steps could be.
