Role of Positive Psychology in Flourishing Enterprise Design

This month our speaker is our long time member Bill Craig and is currently Board Chair and President of the Canadian Positive Psychology Association (CPPA). His talk builds on his practice and research work at the intersection of strongly sustainability business and positive psychology.

Positive psychology defines the highest level of human potential as "flourishing" (compared with lower levels of human potential - languishing and mere survival).  Many positive psychologists and organizational designers have been exploring how organizational and business model design can enable or disable the realization of individual flourishing.  For example, please review our member Dr. David Cooperrider's 2017 which introduces this potential (see this LinkedIn Post):

Cooperrider, D. L. (2017). The Quest for a Flourishing Earth is the Most Significant Organizational Design Opportunity of the 21st Century: How Macro Organizational Design can be the most powerful form of Micro Organizational Design. Organizational Designer Practitioner, 49(3), 42–51.

So we are delighted that this month our Bill will review his research and practical experiences in this critical area of research and practice to enable strongly sustainable business model design and outcomes.

As usual, we are meeting on the 2nd Tuesday of the month
  • Date: Tues October 9th
  • Time: 90 minutes starting  13h30 PST / 16h30 EST / 21h30 GMT / 22h30 CET / 05h30 JST (+1 day)

To introduce his talk Bill wrote:

Positive psychology is a relatively young scientific field (1998) that has seen a significant research and rapid growth in the last twenty years.  For many  years the primary focus of the field was on the individual and how individuals can thrive, flourish and experience improved levels of well-being through optimal human functioning.

Early on in the development of the field the value of positive psychology concepts, theories and interventions to teams, workplaces, organizations, and communities were identified.

Over the last fifteen years a key area of study and application of positive psychology has merged traditional organizational design with positive psychology under the label of positive organizational scholarship (POS) and positive organization behaviour (POB) with a strong focus on positive institutions and positive leadership initially.  Currently, a positive lens has been applied to a variety of areas of interest to business - examples include positive culture, positive leadership, positive workplaces, positive teams and teaming, positive innovation, positive change management.

More recently, positive psychology concepts, theories and techniques have been applied to enterprise and global flourishing.

This presentation will introduce positive psychology, linkages of positive psychology to individual, team, workplace, organization, community and planetary flourishing (versus languishing)  and illustrate how positive psychology can augment flourishing business design and enhance enterprise flourishing/well-being outcomes. It will illustrate one or more examples of applying positive psychology to flourishing business design - positive innovation, positive leadership.

Bill Craig is the president and founder of BizMundi Inc an applied research, advisory and consultancy group.  BizMundi attempts to integrate organizational design and positive psychology guided by a variety of thinking models - system (whole of system), design, positive-appreciative, agile/lean, flourishing and for-the-world thinking to help build flourishing enterprises.  Bill is also president of the Canadian Positive Psychology Association.
